Our 4 Day Luxury Campervan Itinerary of Donegal

There’s something special about Donegal. Maybe it’s the endless coastline, the dramatic cliffs, or the feeling that you’ve stumbled across one of Ireland’s last truly wild places. Whatever it is, Donegal is made for road trips – and there’s no better way to experience it than in a luxury campervan.

For four unforgettable days, we explored some of the county’s most breathtaking locations, from hidden beaches and scenic mountain passes to cosy seaside towns and iconic Wild Atlantic Way stops. The best part? We had the freedom to wake up somewhere new every morning, all while travelling in total comfort.

If you’re planning your own campervan escape, here’s our perfect 4-day Donegal itinerary.

Day 1: Letterkenny → Glenveagh National Park → Dunfanaghy

Gleanveagh National Park

Your Donegal adventure begins the moment you hit the road. After picking up your luxury campervan with Rambling Rover, head towards Glenveagh National Park – one of the most beautiful spots in the entire country.

The drive itself sets the tone for the trip ahead: winding roads, rolling hills, and scenery that somehow gets better around every corner.

Spend a few hours exploring Glenveagh National Park and Glenveagh Castle. Whether you fancy a lakeside walk, a coffee overlooking the mountains, or simply soaking in the views, this is the perfect introduction to Donegal’s rugged beauty.

From there, continue on towards Dunfanaghy, one of Donegal’s most charming coastal villages. If the weather behaves, Marble Hill Beach is the ideal place for an evening stroll before settling in for your first night in the campervan.

There’s nothing quite like cooking dinner with an Atlantic sunset outside your window.

Top Tip:

Grab supplies before leaving Letterkenny so you’re fully stocked for your first night on the road.

Day 2: Horn Head → Fanad Head Lighthouse → Portsalon

Fanad Head Lighthouse

Wake up slowly, brew a coffee, and enjoy the freedom that campervan travel brings before heading towards Horn Head.

This scenic drive is one of Donegal’s hidden gems. The roads twist along dramatic cliffs with uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the kind of place where you’ll stop every few minutes just to take another photo.

After exploring Horn Head, make your way towards Fanad Head Lighthouse – one of Ireland’s most iconic coastal landmarks.

The route to Fanad is every bit as stunning as the lighthouse itself. Quiet roads, tiny villages, and endless sea views make this stretch of Donegal feel wonderfully untouched.

Once you reach Fanad Head Lighthouse, take your time exploring the area. On a clear day, the views are absolutely incredible.

Finish the day in Portsalon, home to one of Ireland’s finest beaches. It’s the perfect place to unwind for the evening and enjoy another peaceful night by the coast.

Must Do:

  • Drive the Horn Head loop slowly and stop often
  • Visit Fanad Head Lighthouse at golden hour
  • Take an evening walk along Portsalon Beach

Day 3: Slieve League Cliffs → Killybegs → Donegal Town

Slieve League Cliffs

Day three brings one of the highlights of the entire trip: Slieve League Cliffs.

While many visitors flock to the Cliffs of Moher, Slieve League offers something even more dramatic – with fewer crowds and a much wilder atmosphere.

The cliffs tower above the Atlantic Ocean and the views are genuinely unforgettable. If you enjoy walking, there are several trails where you can take in the coastline from different angles.

After a morning exploring Slieve League, continue to Killybegs for lunch. As one of Ireland’s biggest fishing ports, seafood lovers are in for a treat here.

Fresh chowder, fish and chips, and local seafood are easy to find, making this the perfect refuelling stop before heading onwards to Donegal Town.

Donegal Town has a completely different atmosphere from the quieter coastal villages earlier in the trip. Here, you’ll find lively pubs, traditional Irish music, great restaurants, and plenty of charm.

It’s the ideal final evening stop before beginning the journey home.

Top Tip:

Arrive at Slieve League earlier in the day if possible, especially during summer months.

From coastal escapes to unforgettable road trips, Rambling Rover helps you explore Ireland your way.

Day 4: Mullaghmore → Benbulben Views → Journey Home

Benbullen Views

No Donegal road trip feels complete without one final scenic drive.

As you begin making your way home, take a detour through Mullaghmore and enjoy the incredible coastal views towards Benbulben Mountain.

This part of the Wild Atlantic Way feels peaceful, dramatic, and completely unforgettable – the perfect ending to a luxury campervan adventure.

Stop for a final coffee by the sea, take one last walk along the coastline, and start planning your next trip before this one even ends.

Because once you experience Donegal by campervan, one trip is never enough.
